Dollar Party / March 12th 11pm / Southpole

Yeah, you read right.

Friday, March 12th at 11pm we will be throwing another party (this time no snow to mess things up!) in the Southpole along with Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity.

THIS PARTY IS A DOLLAR! I REPEAT, THIS PARTY IS A DOLLAR!

No inflation, no aged-prices, no catches, this party costs you $1!

All of the money we raise will go towards the Collins Annin fund. Collins was a Residential Coordinator in James Hall on West Green. He passed away from complications with sickle cell anemia. The money raised in this fund will assist his family in bringing his body back to his homeland Ghana.

This is also the pre-party for our Emcee battle the next day in Baker!

DID I MENTION THIS PARTY IS A DOLLAR???

Peace.

From The Post: A Ball Player and Femcee

The crazy thing about this posting is we just had a discussion on the female identity in hiphop last night during our general body meeting… It is wonderful to read an article that highlights something as dope as a woman who plays basketball AND raps, on top of being an OU student! I know there are a lot of emcees (great emcees) who are also students and in extra-curricular activities, but rarely do they get press for it around here. The Post gets much respect for doing an article on someone like that.

Women’s Basketall: Gholson slam dunks the funk

Will Frasure • Staff Writer • wf743006@ohio.edu

Thia Gholson plays hard on the court, but it’s also fair to say the junior goes hard in the booth.

In her spare time, the center likes to make rap music, whether it’s writing lyrics, making beats or actually rapping. The Louisville, Ky., native started in middle school after her brothers turned her on to rap.

“I definitely do it a lot on my free time just for fun,” Gholson said. “It’s kind of hard do to it during school with all my homework and basketball.”

It began when her older brother showed her music-making programs on his laptop, which inspired her love of making beats. Gholson also grew up near a music studio where her brother and friends used to make music and songs to pass time.

“I’d go into the studio and have fun with my friends,” Gholson said. “I really enjoy making the beats to the songs and love listening to them.”

Her brothers’ coined the name “Thiski,” Gholson’s rapper name, and she still goes by the name today. She wanted to study music production when she came to Athens, but picked telecommunications instead.

Gholson credits some of the biggest female rappers as influences, including Young Money’s Nikki Minaj, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, and Trina. Male rappers who influenced her include Lil’ Wayne, The Game, and Juelz Santana.

“Nikki Minaj was a huge influence to me before she joined Young Money,” Gholson said. “I really prefer her old style compared to the new Harajuku Barbie and all the new, crazy stuff she does.”

It will be in the Maggie Davis Room on the first floor of Baker University Center (in the food court area).

We have so much planned, and being that it Slick Rick Da Ruler’s birthday this week, please believe this meeting will be off the chain (the “all them crazy chains he had” type of off the chain)!

XXL’s Top 100 Hiphop Websites List

Of course we’re not on it (we probably came to 101 or 100.5…. ok, kidding?) LOL

There are a lot of sites on here that provide links to leaks, mix tapes, and other things it probably shouldn’t. It wouldn’t be surprising if you see a lot of these sites get removed because of how they operate. There are also some cool sites that give some great insight on the underground scene, the throwbacks, and commercial hiphop. One site I don’t see on here that should be is the T.R.O.Y movement who was #20 on Vibe’s list.

So here’s the list XXL put together for their Dec/Jan issue:

We Need to Bring Back The Stop the Violence Movement!

Remember this? KRS-One, MC Lyte, Dougie Fresh, and a whole bunch of other hiphop artists got together and did a record promoting the anti-violence movement. Hearing about Derrion Albert, the mass shootings in Fort Hood and Orlando, and the dead bodies in Cleveland reminded me that being violent (no matter what race, ethnicity, etc) is self-destructive! So enjoy the music and life in general.

Peace (literally).

Whiteface: An Open Discussion on a Post-Racial OU

After a recent performance by Fridays Live!, where one of their cast members (who was white) played Oprah. For her performance, she put on makeup to make her look Black and played a very controversial role as the richest woman in the world.

So after much controversy (i.e. a million and one letters to the Post and more), we the Hip Hop Congress are providing a floor for all to discuss their issue (or non-issue) with Fridays Live! through a healthy, open discussion of the historical context behind Blackface and why the Black community is offended. We also want to provide an opportunity for Fridays Live! to clarify their actions. And ultimately, we want to find a common ground and understanding of the differences between the multicultural and non-multicultural students of Ohio University and residents of Athens, Ohio. Basically, we are ready to lend a hand in taking steps to solve our differences in this community, racially and ethnically!

The discussion will take place on Thursday 5pm, in Bentley 236 (around the corner from Lindley Hall, down the street from Chubb Hall) at Ohio University’s campus. Please come and support, especially if you feel this campus needs to take steps toward reaching common ground and understanding!

Peace.

Open Letter to BET (Dear Debra) by Jasiri X

This had to probably be the most positive and prolific criticism on BET I’ve heard in a song written by Jasiri X, everyone’s new favorite conscious rapper. Check it out here!

Peep the “Hiphop vs. America” line at the end – dopeness.
